Morningside University’s Aviation Department has achieved another major advancement with the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of its Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) certification pathway. This authorization allows Morningside graduates to qualify for airline pilot positions with reduced flight-hour requirements, creating a direct advantage in one of the nation’s most in-demand career fields.
The approval comes on the heels of Morningside’s full FAA Part 141 Pilot School certification in May 2025, solidifying the University’s place among a select group of institutions meeting the FAA’s most rigorous academic and training standards.
“Morningside Aviation is on a remarkable trajectory,” said Dr. Chris Spicer, Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. “The FAA’s approval of our R-ATP program recognizes both the strength of our curriculum and the quality of our faculty and training partner, Oracle Aviation. It provides our students with an edge as they transition into professional pilot careers.”
Through R-ATP authorization, graduates of Morningside’s Bachelor of Science in Professional Flight may apply for their Airline Transport Pilot certificate with 1,000 flight hours rather than the traditional 1,500. This reduction in required hours saves time and resources, while ensuring students are fully prepared to meet the demands of commercial aviation.
Dr. Thomas Paulsen, Dean of the School of Agriculture and Aviation, emphasized the impact on students: “This approval delivers on our promise to provide not only excellent training, but also a clear and accelerated pathway into airline careers. It’s an exciting step forward for our students and for aviation in Siouxland.”
Training at Sioux Gateway Airport (KSUX), Morningside Aviation students benefit from a towered airport environment, structured Part 141 curriculum, and industry partnerships that blend classroom learning with real-world flight experience.
